The Chicken Sandwich That’s Better Than Chick-Fil-A

The Chicken Sandwich That’s Better Than Chick-Fil-A

If you live somewhere with Chick-Fil-A, you probably know how addictive their sandwiches can be. The buttery, soft buns, the perfectly seasoned chicken with delicate breading and juicy pickles. It’s delicious, every single time. Fast food has never been my thing, but I’ve always had a weakness for these delectable sandwiches.

Of course, the downside is that their chicken undoubtedly comes from industrial factory farms. I know I can’t be the only one with a desire to recreate this incredible sandwich with our high quality chicken, and I’m here to share this cult classic copycat recipe with you. Believe it or not, it’s even better than the original.

Choosing Family Farms Over Factory Farms

At Beck & Bulow, we get a lot of satisfaction from converting people away from eating factory farmed meat. It’s good for the planet, our emotional well-being, our health and our future. We believe eating meat is essential for humans to function at optimal health, but this can only be the case if it’s raised and processed the right way. When it comes to chicken, it’s necessary to use the highest discernment in sourcing. We’re proud to provide delicious chicken from a co-op of family farms, locally raised in sunny Colorado.

Happy Chickens Raised Without Antibiotics

These birds are humanely raised and cage free, with plentiful space to roam freely in cozy, well-ventilated barns with access to the outdoors. They enjoy unlimited access to water and nutritious vegetarian food supplemented with enzymes, essential oils and vitamins. The chickens frequently relax in their cozy beds made of wood shavings and rice hulls.

They are a Cobb Hubbard hybrid breed, carefully selected for the great flavor and consistency of the meat as well as their docile temperament. The barn attendants are trained in chicken behavior and take care to make the environment as naturally supportive as possible.

  1. Thaw the chicken breasts in the refrigerator overnight. Prior to cooking, set out at room temperature for approximately 20 minutes - room temperature meat will cook more evenly. Before preparing, pat the chicken dry with paper towels.
  2. Slice each chicken breast in half horizontally. Use a sharp knife and place your hand on the top of the chicken breast to do this, cutting slowly and carefully. This will create chicken patties for four sandwiches.
  3. Use a baking dish to marinate the chicken breasts in 1 ½ cups of the buttermilk. Let sit for at least 30 minutes, or longer if time permits. When finished marinating, drain the buttermilk thoroughly from the chicken.
  4. Whisk together the remaining one cup of buttermilk and the egg. Set aside.
  5. Use a large freezer bag or bowl to mix together the flour and powdered sugar. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Heat the peanut oil in a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  7. While the oil is heating, bread the chicken. Working in batches, coat the pieces of chicken breast in the buttermilk mixture. Let the excess drip off and then coat in the flour mixture. Then, double coat by dipping again in the egg mixture, and then the flour mixture. This creates a really delicious, crispy chicken sandwich.
  8. When the oil is sufficiently hot (you can test this by flicking a few drops of water in the pan - if it evaporates instantly, it’s ready), begin cooking the chicken.
  9. Two at a time, cook the chicken fillets in the skillet until golden brown and perfectly crispy. It should take around 4-5 minutes cooking time on each side.
  10. Set aside the cooked chicken on a paper towel lined plate. Toast and butter the buns.
  11. Serve immediately, topped with pickles, lettuce and whatever other condiments you desire.
