Slow Cooked Bison Sweet Mustard BBQ Sausage Bites

Slow Cooked Bison Sweet Mustard BBQ Sausage Bites

If you haven’t tried our bison hotdogs or bratwursts, you’re in for a real treat. We get customers all the time telling us that they’re the best they’ve ever tasted. Or even that they don’t even normally like eating brats or hotdogs, but ours are irresistible to them. The truth is, these free range, grass fed bison sausages are so good, you can cook them up all by themselves and be satisfied. They’re my favorite go-to item for quick meals because they’re so dang delicious and they couldn’t possibly be any easier.

Slow Cooked Bison Sweet Mustard BBQ Sausage Bites - Beck & Bulow

Our 100% Bison Sausages And Hotdogs Are Irresistible

Until I started working for Beck & Bulow, I typically avoided sausages because I felt like they were almost always of questionable sourcing. These are sausages and hotdogs that I feel great about eating and they taste incredible. This super simple recipe turns them into a fingerlicking good appetizer or party item. Simply slice them into bite-sized pieces and slow cook in a delectable sauce with all the flavors of barbecue, tangy Dijon mustard and sweet coconut sugar.

Customize this to your tastes by choosing your favorite barbecue sauce (or better yet making your own), and adding a kick of hot sauce if you like things on the spicy side. I love the taste of coconut sugar, but you could easily substitute with brown sugar, molasses or honey. Blackstrap molasses, in particular, gives an authentic southern barbecue flavor. Serve these mouthwatering little sausage bites with toothpicks (or just put them on a plate and dig in!). Kids and adults alike will go nuts for them.

This Recipe Really Couldn’t Be Easier

This is a super easy dish that will be a hit at any gathering. I opted for our hickory smoked sausage, but our classic hotdogs would be great, too. And if you’re looking for an extra kick of flavor, you could go with our jalapeno cheddar sausages. Whichever you choose, you’ll find yourself making this incredibly delicious little appetizer time and time again. You can easily make this in either an Instant Pot or a crock pot - if you don’t have either one, you can always just use low heat on the stovetop.

Pasture Raised Bison That Roam Freely

Our bison live free range on 20,000 beautiful acres here in New Mexico, or roam freely on our carefully selected partner ranches. They are pasture raised and never administered any amount of hormones, steroids or antibiotics. These are powerful, strong animals that live essentially wild with minimal handling. There were once 60 million bison roaming North America, and we hope to see their numbers increase back to even 1 million during our lifetime.

By increasing the demand for ethically sourced bison meat, we can help to bolster their population. The more people that want to purchase this nourishing and nutrient dense meat, the more farmers will be encouraged to raise bison. This directly helps to increase the number of herds which assists in providing genetic diversity for the population.

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages of bison hickory smoked sausage or classic bison hotdogs
  • 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • Garlic powder to taste
  • Hot sauce to taste

Instructions:

  1. Thaw the bison sausages or hotdogs in advance. Slice into bite sized pieces about 2 inches each in length.
  2. Combine the barbecue sauce, coconut sugar, mustard, garlic powder and hot sauce in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add the sausages or hotdogs to the bottom of an Instant Pot or crockpot. Pour the sauce mixture over the top. Cook for approximately 2 ½ hours on low (since the hotdogs and sausages are already cooked all the way through, this time can easily be adjusted to suit your schedule)
  4. Serve with toothpicks or on a plate as an appetizer or fun summer cookout item.
